Individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have obsessions (recurrent thoughts or images that are very upsetting and sometimes nonsensical) and compulsions (repetitive tasks that are done to reduce the anxiety generated by obsessing, like checking door locks or cleaning hands) that greatly interfere with their functioning. Although many people report some OCD-like symptoms, individuals with true OCD are significantly impacted by their obsessions and compulsions.
Exposure and response prevention (ERP or EX/RP) is a CBT intervention specifically designed for the treatment of OCD. It is an intensive treatment, but has a significant evidence-base supporting its ability to improve symptoms and functioning among individuals with OCD.
