There are lots of expectations about pregnancy and the postpartum period. Families and friends share secrets about burping, feeding, clothing, sleeping, challenges with older children, managing your expanding family, and other important topics. Despite the fact that nearly half of "new" mothers experience increased anxiety and depression during the pregnancy or postpartum periods (it can happen with your first child or your tenth) and it is estimated that 10% of men also experience increased anxiety/depression, this is usually not an experience that is shared with others. Instead, it can be isolating and devastating. Hormones, transitions at home, changing relationships, traumatic birth stories, and a new baby who requires a lot of attention can make this phase particularly challenging and stressful. You are not alone.
Please do not be afraid to reach out and get help in managing some of the difficulties you may be having during this time. If attending in-person sessions is too challenging, consider online videoconferencing therapy, which will allow you to remain at home with your baby while seeking help.
